Moscow Winter Tram DV Style Video

Moscow, winter 2003, the streets around Red Square under a flat blue-grey overcast sky. Snow falls steadily the whole time. The pavements are packed with snow, the Soviet-era facades are soot-stained, the kiosks are small and lit from inside, and old red-and-cream Soviet trams run on iced tracks. Warm amber light from windows spills onto the snow. St. Basil's Cathedral domes sit soft and half-hidden in the snowfall in the background. The subject is a young adult in their early 20s. Their face, skin tone, eyes, hair colour and hair texture match the reference image exactly in every shot. A natural flush from the cold shows on their cheeks and nose. Their hair is worn loose under a grey fur ushanka. They wear a deep burgundy fur-trimmed long coat, a loose cream oversized wool scarf, cream wide-leg trousers, dark brown leather boots and dark burgundy leather gloves, and carry a warm brown structured leather handbag. Their manner is quiet and composed. Their face, hair and clothing stay the same in every shot. Their breath fogs in the cold air. 0-3s: At a tram stop near Red Square the subject digs through their open handbag, head down. An old Soviet tram grinds in behind them. They look up sharply, see it is the wrong tram, and go straight back to searching the bag. 3-7s: At a street kiosk just off the square the subject holds one glove in their teeth and works coins out of their bare palm. They hand the coins to the babushka inside, who passes them a small paper cup of steaming tea. They wrap both hands around it right away. The exchange is a little clumsy. 7-11s: Walking down a narrow side street with the tea, the subject stops without warning at a dark shop window and uses their reflection as a mirror. They straighten the ushanka and tuck a loose strand of hair back under it, unaware they are being filmed. Satisfied, they walk on. 11-15s: Walking down the snowy street, tea in one hand and handbag in the other, the subject gets passed at close range by an old Soviet tram rattling by fast. The rush of air knocks the ushanka sideways. They grab it with their tea hand, nearly spill the tea, and laugh to themselves. The footage cuts hard to black mid-laugh. Camera: handheld early-2000s consumer DV camcorder in a friend's hands, following the subject the whole time and always reacting a beat late. It drifts off them and finds them again, and nearly walks into them when they stop. Autofocus hunts constantly. Exposure keeps pumping between the bright snow and deep shadow.
