The easy prompt for it is "90s photo, film grain". Both prompts start with two teenage friends laughing on a sofa at a birthday party, each holding a slice of cake. The left one adds *90s photo, film grain*. The right one names the camera and what its flash does: *a cheap point-and-shoot film camera with direct on-camera flash, bright faces, a hard shadow on the wall behind them, slightly faded colours, an orange date stamp '12 08 '97' in the bottom right corner*. Then the room: wood panelling, a flowery sofa, a chunky TV, a flannel shirt and a scrunchie. Before and after: Film grain against the named details. Grain alone gave 90s clothes and rooms in 3 of 3 runs, but no flash: lamps or soft light every time. The named prompt threw a hard shadow on the wall in 2 of 2. > **Tip:** The right-hand prompt never says "film grain". It still looks like film. ## Step 2: Name the flash and the shadow it throws "Direct on-camera flash" alone gave a hard shadow on the wall in 1 of 2 runs. Saying where the shadow falls got it in 5 of 5 runs, here and below. This diner prompt does both, and we set the year to 1997. ```text 35mm disposable camera shot, {year}. Our grain-only runs added a stamp 2 times in 3, once sideways down the left edge. Give it the digits and the corner, and it copies them. When it does not work: period props bring period logos. 4 of our 12 pictures had a real brand on a can, a cup, a TV or a fleece, so look closely before you post. ## Read a 90s prompt before you copy it The steps above come down to four things a real 90s snapshot had. Check which of them a prompt names before you paste it. - **The camera.** A cheap point-and-shoot or a disposable: a snapshot, not a shoot. - **The flash and its shadow.** The words that changed our pictures most. - **The date.** Digits in quotes and a corner, or accept whatever the model prints. - **The room and the clothes.** Wood panelling, a chunky TV, flannel, taped photos. The model already knows these, so two or three are enough. Google's own [Nano Banana Pro guide](https://dev.to/googleai/nano-banana-pro-prompting-guide-strategies-1h9n) puts it in general terms: "Define the subject, the setting, the lighting, and the mood", and stop using "tag soups" like *dog, park, 4k, realistic*. A prompt that is only *vintage, retro, 90s, grain* is a tag soup with a date on it. ## Eight more prompts, sorted by the light they ask for All eight are real Nano Banana Pro posts. Where we ran one, we say what we got. Where we did not, we say only what it asks for. ### Flash, indoors The look most people mean by "90s photo": a flash in a small room at night. This post holds two prompts: a close-up, then a candid shot looking back, both in a striped 90s windbreaker against a wall of taped polaroids. The line to copy is the last one of the first prompt. For the candid shot too, paste the second half on its own. The next prompt is written as settings, like a camera menu. It names a 35mm point-and-shoot, makes the on-camera flash the main light, keeps the room lamps dim, and bans plastic skin and beauty filters. Outdoors, people shot in whatever light there was. This street portrait puts a young woman on a crosswalk at dusk, holding a point-and-shoot of her own. To avoid using a real person's face, we first generated a plain, modern photo of a made-up woman in Nano Banana Pro, then ran two of the prompts on it in its edit mode. Her face, freckles and hair stayed hers, even though the prompt asks for black hair. The model also added a date stamp nobody asked for, sideways down the left edge, as in our grain-only runs. The next prompt is a film still in a lived-in 90s home: a floral vest, high-waisted jeans, a wide belt and a high ponytail. The setting blank picks the room. We wrote *small kitchen*. It is written for a man in olive and charcoal, and it says the mood comes from 70s to early-90s studio portraits. The light is a large softbox, warm and even, the opposite of an on-camera flash. Not in our runs. Naming the camera and the flash brought the film look with it, and the grain words alone never brought the flash. ### Why does my date stamp come out wrong? In our runs, a prompt without a date got one the model made up, in its own format and corner. Put the digits in quotes, as Google's [Nano Banana Pro guide](https://dev.to/googleai/nano-banana-pro-prompting-guide-strategies-1h9n) advises for any text, and name the corner. ### Can I use my own photo? Yes, with a reference-photo prompt like the one Esquire India printed, which asks for "gentle flash falloff" and "slightly faded colours". We did not test that version here, so check that the face still looks like you. Two of the promptclay prompts above kept our made-up starting face in 3 runs out of 3, judged by eye. ### Why does my 90s picture look staged? One of our three grain-only runs came out like a costume party: neat outfits, even light, a banner straight across the wall. The runs that named the flash and its shadow looked caught, not set up. Esquire India's prompt comes at it from the other side and asks you to "avoid modern retouching, excessive sharpness, beauty filters". ### What date should I put on the stamp? Any date in the decade you want, written the way the camera printed it, like *12 08 '97* or *OCT 26 '97*. When we gave a year but no date, the model picked an October date in that year on its own, 3 times out of 3. ### Why does a logo show up when I never asked for one? 4 of our first 12 pictures had a real brand on a can, a cup, a TV or a fleece, though no prompt named one.
